High-Functioning Depression Therapy

High-functioning depression is persistent low mood in someone who keeps going, holding down a job, raising kids, meeting the obligations, while feeling flat, joyless, or depleted underneath. Therapy helps you name what is happening and rebuild energy and meaning, even when, especially when, life looks fine from the outside. You do not have to be falling apart to deserve support.

Clinically, this often looks like persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), a longer-lasting, lower-grade form of depression that can quietly run for years (National Institute of Mental Health). It is common, often missed, and very workable.

What it can look like

Our approach

We help you understand the pattern and gently rebuild momentum, connection, and meaning, drawing on evidence-based approaches matched to you. It is part of your wider depression care and individual therapy, and when medication would help, we coordinate with psychiatry.

As Jack Foley, LMFT, puts it:

"People assume depression means you can't get out of bed. Plenty of people who look high-functioning are quietly running on empty, and that's worth treating too."

Questions

Frequently asked

What is high-functioning depression?

It is a common term for persistent low mood in someone who keeps performing, working, parenting, and showing up, while feeling flat, joyless, or depleted underneath. Clinically it often looks like persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia).

Is it real if I am still functioning?

Yes. Getting through the day does not mean you are well. Persistent low mood is real, it is treatable, and you do not have to wait until you are falling apart to get support.

How is it different from major depression?

High-functioning depression tends to be lower in intensity but longer in duration, sometimes years, while major depression is often more acute. They can also overlap. We help sort out which is which.

Can therapy help?

Yes. Therapy helps you understand the pattern, rebuild energy and meaning, and address what keeps the low mood in place. Some people also benefit from medication, which we coordinate with psychiatry.

Do you offer this online?

Yes, in person in the South Bay and via telehealth across California.
