Grief Counseling in the South Bay

Grief is the natural response to losing someone or something that mattered. Grief counseling is a steady, compassionate space to feel what you feel, make sense of the loss, and find a way to carry it that lets life go on alongside it. There is no timeline and no right way to grieve, and you do not have to do it alone.

Grief is universal, and it is not a disorder. For most people it softens with time and support. When it stays acute and disabling for a year or more, it can become prolonged grief disorder, now a recognized, treatable condition (American Psychological Association). Either way, support helps.

Our approach

We move at your pace, never pushing you to rush or to get over it. The work makes room for the full weight of the loss while gently helping you stay connected to living. It sits within your wider individual therapy, and when grief overlaps with depression or a major life transition, we treat the whole picture.

As Jack Foley, LMFT, puts it:

"Grief isn't a problem to be solved or a stage to get past. The work is learning to carry the loss, and to let life keep going alongside it."

Questions

Frequently asked

Is grief counseling only for recent loss?

No. Grief has no timeline. People come to us soon after a loss, and also years later when grief resurfaces or never quite settled. Both are valid reasons to reach out.

Is grief a mental illness?

No. Grief is a natural response to loss, not a disorder. When grief becomes prolonged and disabling, it can meet criteria for prolonged grief disorder, which is treatable. Most grief, though, simply benefits from support.

What kinds of loss do you work with?

The death of a loved one, but also other profound losses: a relationship, a marriage, health, a pregnancy, a role or identity, or a beloved pet. Loss is loss.

How does grief counseling help?

It offers a steady, compassionate space to feel what you feel, make sense of the loss, and find a way to carry it that lets life continue alongside it. We do not rush you, and we never ask you to get over it.

Do you offer grief counseling online?

Yes, in person in the South Bay and via telehealth across California.
